Green Smoothie Crazy!

27 Apr

For anyone who follows me on Twitter [ @ WeHeartVegan ] or Instagram [ @ WeHeartVegan ], you’ll know that for the past week I have been going green smoothie crazy (:

So here’s the two recipes that I am crazy head-over-heels for this week!!!

Detoxing Green Romaine Smoothie

Serves 2

3/4 cup water

1/4 cup cherry juice (or any type of juice)

1 head romaine lettuce

1 medium cucumber

1 Tbsp. chia seeds

3/4 cup frozen strawberries

1 small frozen banana (use 2 if you’re new to green smoothies)

1 Tbsp. vegan protein powder (this is optional)

Directions:

Put all in a high powered blender according to the blenders directions. Blend and enjoy!

Green Swiss Chard Heaven

Serves 2

1 cup water

2 large leaves Swiss chard (about 2 packed cups)

1 medium cucumber

3/4 cup frozen strawberries

1 small banana

1 Tbsp. chia seeds

Juice from 1/2 lime

1 Tbsp. vegan protein powder (optional)

Directions:

Put all in a high powered blender according to the blenders directions. Blend and enjoy!

These may be two servings, but you can easily drink the whole thing yourself!! Divide it between two tight sealing containers (like mason jars), drink one, and bring the other on the go! Drink green smoothies all morning to feel at your best. Trust me.

Cacao-Maca Smoothie

14 Jun

I never thought I would blog.  Over a year ago I never even looked at a blog.  The internet was for Facebook, email, and AIM… none of this checking everyday to see what Leanne is up to or to see what Kristin is blending/juicing, I didn’t log on to the computer to click on my top sites to check on OhSheGlows, HEAB, or Averie, and I sure didn’t comment on blog posts hoping to get a response.  Life back then was more simple.  Now my day starts and ends with Twitter, I cook with a camera pasted to my hand, and I make everyone wait to eat so I can photograph every angle.  I’m not complaining.  I love this “job” I have to blog recipes and inform people on veganism.  It’s an amazing gift.  It just gets hard sometimes.

Today is another gloomy day outside, which could be why I’m here pondering the past.  It’s impossible to get motivated.  I had a bit of a sour stomach from the moment I awoke and I haven’t really been able to eat anything.  That being said, I think a creamy chocolate shake will go down with ease!

Cacao-Maca Cashew Shake

Serves 2

1/3 cup raw cashews

2/3 cup water

2 Tbsp. cacao nibs

1 Tbsp. raw maca powder

2 Tbsp. coconut flakes, unsweetened

1-2 small frozen bananas

1/2 tsp. almond or vanilla extract (optional)

Small pinch sea salt

Directions:

In a Vita-mix, or strong blender, puree the cashews with the water.  Add the rest of the ingredients and blend until smooth.  Add more water if you want a thinner consistency.  This shake came out to be more like a pudding… which is fine by me!

And here’s some more pondering:  For the past week I’ve been having a great debate with myself.  I love the idea of going raw, but it’s pretty darn hard for me.  I can do a day with no problem, but then the next day comes and I’m tempted by everything at work, expenses and food still in my cabinets!  The benefits of raw are tremendous, but why isn’t that enough?!

I need to find this middle ground where I can be completely satisfied with the way I treat my body.

What do you do to find middle ground in life?  Exercise?  Eating healthy?  Meditating?

Pumpkin Pie Breakfast Smoothie

20 Mar

For the past couple months I have been hands down addicted to my Vita-mix!  Usually I buy something, use it a few times, then it gathers dust on the shelf… but not this time.  The Vita-mix is useful all the time!!  This morning I was in a hurry and craved a nutrient dense breakfast fast.  Grabbing some things I always have on hand (canned pumpkin, shelled hemp seeds and almond milk) I could easily throw together a protein packed smoothie that gave me the energy I needed to get through the morning!

Yes I’m in the car and in drive, but NO I’m not actually moving… I’m at a red light (; it would be very dangerous to take pictures while driving: not recommended…

Pumpkin Pie Breakfast Smoothie

Serves 1

1 cup almond milk, unsweetened original

2 Tbsp. WHV raw cinnamon cashew spread (this could be substituted with 2 Tbsp. cashew butter and 1/4-1/2 tsp. cinnamon)

1/3 cup canned pumpkin puree

2 dried dates

1 tsp. chia seeds

1 tsp. hemp seeds

4 ice cubes

Directions:

Place ingredients into the Vita-mix, or a powerful blender, and blend!  Pour into you travel mug, cup or jar (yes I’m using a roasted red pepper jar… no judgement) and enjoy!  It’s good to choose a mug that fits into your cup holder if you’re going to be on the move.
